Green & Local
Our Responsibility to the Environment
Our planet is a beautiful place and we feel it’s our responsibility to take care of it as best as we can.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS WE ARE KEEPING IT GREEN
We operate our restaurant the same way we live our own lives…using only what we need and creating as little waste as possible. Since opening in 2006, we have continued to implement as many GREEN practices as we can. Here are some ways we are doing our part for the planet.
The best food comes from local sources. We are proud to be partners with Elmwood Stock Farm, an organic farm in Georgetown, KY who brings us the freshest, tastiest produce Kentucky can grow!
We will also be sourcing locally from our friends at Seedleaf, a local non-profit that also is our compost partner.
Thai Orchid Cafe is a RECYCLING PARTNER with the Live Green Lexington Partner program.
All cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum, plastic, and all other materials that are recycled by the city, we are recycled in our restaurant. We also reuse everything we can. Did you know there are so many uses for a 5-gallon soy sauce bucket?
OUR RESTAURANT GARDEN
Each summer we plant our own veggies, herbs and hot peppers in our restaurant garden which is less than 2 miles from Thai Orchid Cafe. It doesn’t get any fresher than that! We grow our own sweet basil & various hot peppers (jalapenos, habaneros, ghost chilies, Thai chilis), which we use year round.
All pre-consumer organic waste, including vegetable peels, fruit rinds, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters, egg shells, are composted by our friends at SeedLeaf, a local non-profit that nourishes communities by growing, cooking, sharing, and recycling food.
During all our remodel projects, we have donated any reusable furniture, light fixtures, counter tops, windows, and other building materials to the Lexington Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The ReStore is a home improvement resale store that sells donated new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building supplies and appliances.
All ReStore proceeds benefit Lexington Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build safe, decent, affordable homes for hard-working families in Lexington and around the world.
